Expert root canal treatment at Knights Road Dental Centre

What is a root canal? Root canal treatment, often referred to as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure designed to save, restore and help an infected or damaged tooth. This treatment option may be carried out when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or trauma. By removing the diseased or dead pulp from the affected tooth, we can effectively manage the spread of infection and abscesses. Knights Road Dental Centre are very experienced at carrying out this procedure but we understand it can cause anxiety so please talk to us so we can explain the process and calm your fears.

What symptoms indicate you might need a root canal?

Being alert towards the symptoms of a tooth nerve infection can be vital in preventing severe dental issues. Common signs include:

  • persistent toothache
  • pain or sensitivity when eating or drinking
  • swelling gums around a tooth
  • or a darkening of a tooth.
Occasionally, there might not be any noticeable symptoms. Regular check-ups and diagnostic xrays with our team are crucial to ensure we can catch these infections early.

What to expect during root canal treatment

During a root canal procedure, we will first numb the area around the affected tooth using local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the process. We then create an opening in the tooth to access the infected or inflamed pulp. Using specialised instruments, we carefully remove the damaged pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and shape the root canals. Once the canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material to seal them and prevent further infection. Finally, the tooth is restored with a filling or crown to protect and strengthen it.

This process may take 2-3 visits. At every stage of the treatment, our team prioritises your comfort and wellbeing.
